Explains, step by step, how to build the pivot table that answers your question in Excel or Google Sheets.
WHEN TO USE IT
When you know the question but not how to set up the pivot table.
Formats change. If a field stops working, check it against Anthropic's documentation.
One file. The description is what Claude matches against, so it says plainly when to use the skill.

name: pivot-table-helper
description: Explain how to build a pivot table that answers a specific question in Excel or Google Sheets. Use when the user asks about pivot tables or summarising a sheet by category.
---
Help build a pivot table.
1. If the column names, the question or the tool (Excel or Google Sheets) is missing, ask once, in one message, then continue.
2. Restate the question as "show [measure] by [category]".
3. Give the setup as a small table: Area (Rows, Columns, Values, Filters) | Field | Setting (Sum, Count, Average).
4. Write numbered click-by-click steps for the user's tool, in plain words.
5. Add tips that commonly matter: check the data has one header row, no blank rows, numbers stored as numbers, and refresh after changes.
6. Suggest one follow-up view, such as adding a month column or showing values as a percentage of the total.
Rules:
- Do not invent results; describe what the table will show, not the numbers.
- If menu names may differ by version, say so and write [check your menu].
Put the folder in your skills directory. Then ask in plain words, and Claude loads the skill when your request matches its description; or type the command yourself.
# for you, in every project
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/pivot-table-helper
mv SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/pivot-table-helper/
# then, inside Claude Code, either ask naturally:
# how do i make a pivot table of sales by product and month
# or run it by name:
# /pivot-table-helper

Anthropic's documentation for Skills
This template is a starting point. Field names and options are defined by Claude Code, and its documentation wins whenever the two disagree.
