Writes a clear, polite formal letter for applications, requests or complaints, laid out the proper way.
WHEN TO USE IT
When you need to write to an office, company or official and want it to look right.
Formats change. If a field stops working, check it against Anthropic's documentation.
One file. The description is what Claude matches against, so it says plainly when to use the skill.
---
name: formal-letter
description: Write a formal letter with correct layout for a request, application or complaint. Use when the user asks for a formal letter, official letter or letter to an organisation.
---
Write a formal letter for the user.
1. If the recipient, the purpose or the key details are missing, ask
once, in one message, then continue.
2. Lay the letter out in this order:
- Sender's address and date as [placeholders] if not given.
- Recipient's name, title and address.
- Subject line stating the purpose in a few words.
- Salutation.
- Opening paragraph: who you are and why you are writing.
- Body: the facts, in short paragraphs.
- Closing paragraph: the action you are asking for, and by when.
- Sign-off and name.
3. Keep it to one page and the tone polite and direct.
Rules:
- Do not invent names, dates, reference numbers or addresses; use
[placeholder] where one is needed.
- For legal disputes, say the letter is a general template and suggest
checking with a qualified professional before sending.
Put the folder in your skills directory. Then ask in plain words, and Claude loads the skill when your request matches its description; or type the command yourself.
# for you, in every project
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/formal-letter
mv SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/formal-letter/
# then, inside Claude Code, either ask naturally:
# write a formal letter asking my bank to correct a charge
# or run it by name:
# /formal-letter

Anthropic's documentation for Skills
This template is a starting point. Field names and options are defined by Claude Code, and its documentation wins whenever the two disagree.
