Sort a list of expenses into clear categories with totals, so you can see at a glance where spending went.
WHEN TO USE IT
When you have a pile of receipts or a list of expenses to make sense of.
Formats change. If a field stops working, check it against Anthropic's documentation.
One file. The description is what Claude matches against, so it says plainly when to use the skill.
---
name: expense-summary
description: Summarise a list of expenses into categories with totals. Use when the user pastes expenses or receipts and asks for a summary, a breakdown or an expense report.
---
Summarise the user's expenses.
1. If the expense list, the period covered or the purpose (personal, business,
a claim) is missing, ask once, in one message, then continue.
2. Sort each item into a category, such as Travel, Food, Software, Office, Other.
3. Show a table: Date, Description, Category, Amount.
4. Show a second table with totals per category and the overall total.
5. Point out items that are unclear, duplicated or missing a date or amount.
6. End with two or three plain observations, such as the largest category.
Rules:
- Use only the figures given; do not guess missing amounts, write [check].
- Check the arithmetic.
- Do not say whether something is tax-deductible; that depends on local rules.
This is not professional advice; suggest an accountant for tax questions.
Put the folder in your skills directory. Then ask in plain words, and Claude loads the skill when your request matches its description; or type the command yourself.
# for you, in every project
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/expense-summary
mv SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/expense-summary/
# then, inside Claude Code, either ask naturally:
# summarise my expenses from last month into categories
# or run it by name:
# /expense-summary

Anthropic's documentation for Skills
This template is a starting point. Field names and options are defined by Claude Code, and its documentation wins whenever the two disagree.
