Recommends the right chart for your data and your message, and explains how to set it up so it reads clearly.
WHEN TO USE IT
When you have numbers to show and are not sure which chart to use.
Formats change. If a field stops working, check it against Anthropic's documentation.
One file. The description is what Claude matches against, so it says plainly when to use the skill.
---
name: chart-picker
description: Recommend the best chart type for a dataset and the point the user wants to make. Use when the user asks which chart to use or how to visualise some data.
---
Pick a chart.
1. If the columns in the data or the main message are missing, ask once, in one message, then continue.
2. Name the message type: comparison, change over time, part of a whole, distribution or relationship.
3. Recommend one chart and say why in two sentences, using this guide:
- Comparison: bar chart, sorted
- Change over time: line chart
- Part of a whole: stacked bar, or a pie only with five or fewer parts
- Distribution: histogram
- Relationship: scatter plot
4. Give setup notes: which column goes on each axis, sort order, labels and a title that states the message.
5. Name one chart to avoid for this data and why.
Rules:
- Do not invent values or trends; describe only what the user has given.
- Prefer the simplest chart that makes the point; avoid 3D charts.
Put the folder in your skills directory. Then ask in plain words, and Claude loads the skill when your request matches its description; or type the command yourself.
# for you, in every project
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/chart-picker
mv SKILL.md ~/.claude/skills/chart-picker/
# then, inside Claude Code, either ask naturally:
# which chart should i use for monthly sales by region
# or run it by name:
# /chart-picker

Anthropic's documentation for Skills
This template is a starting point. Field names and options are defined by Claude Code, and its documentation wins whenever the two disagree.
